German B1 Speaking Exam Preparation: Structure, Phrases & Tips

The speaking module (Modul Sprechen) of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 or TELC Deutsch B1 often causes the highest test anxiety among students. You are sitting face-to-face with two certified examiners and a conversation partner, and you must demonstrate spontaneous vocabulary recall, sentence cohesion, and active listening.

The secret to scoring high in B1 speaking is not speaking like a native German novelist; it is mastering structural predictability. When you know exactly how each exam part unfolds and command the right transition formulas (Redemittel), you eliminate panic and project calm confidence.

The Three Parts of the Goethe B1 Speaking Exam

Teil 1: Gemeinsam etwas planen (Planning Something Together - 3 min)

You and your partner receive a prompt card (e.g., organizing a farewell party for a colleague, planning a weekend trip, or arranging a hospital visit). You must discuss 4 specific bullet points and arrive at a consensus.

Teil 2: Ein Thema präsentieren (Presenting a Topic - 3 to 4 min per candidate)

You choose one of two topics (e.g., "Brauchen Kinder ein eigenes Handy?" or "Sollte man im Internet einkaufen?"). Your presentation must follow a strict 5-part architecture:

Presentation Phase Purpose High-Scoring Redemittel (German Phrases)
1. Introduction State topic & outline structure "Das Thema meiner Präsentation lautet... Meine Präsentation besteht aus folgenden Teilen..."
2. Personal Experience Describe your own background "In meiner persönlichen Erfahrung habe ich festgestellt, dass..."
3. Home Country Context Describe the situation in your homeland "In meinem Heimatland Indien ist die Situation so, dass die meisten Menschen..."
4. Advantages & Disadvantages Weigh up both perspectives "Einerseits bietet dies große Vorteile, wie... Andererseits gibt es auch Nachteile, nämlich..."
5. Conclusion & Thanks State your personal verdict "Zusammenfassend bin ich der Meinung, dass... Ich bedanke mich herzlich für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit."

Teil 3: Feedback geben und Fragen beantworten (Feedback & Q&A - 2 min)

After your partner presents, you must deliver positive feedback on their presentation and ask one relevant question:

Examiner's Perspective: Examiners are listening for interaction. Do not deliver a monologue in Teil 1! Ask your partner: "Und was denkst du darüber?" (And what do you think about that?). Active turn-taking earns top marks for communicative competency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my speaking partner is very quiet or doesn't speak?
Do not dominate the conversation rudely. Instead, actively invite them in: "Was ist deine Meinung dazu?". The examiners will reward you for demonstrating empathetic leadership and collaborative communication.
Can I take notes during the preparation time?
Yes. You get 15 minutes of preparation time before entering the examination room. You may write bullet points and keywords on your scratch paper. However, you should not read full sentences off the paper during the test; maintain eye contact.
How does PMG German Hub practice speaking simulations?
